All of these trails are well marked and easy to hike.  However, this is the place to get out your mountain bikes.  Watch for the muddy areas on the trail.  Read my blog above to read about a funny little mountain biking story.  A great overall recreational area that’s pet friendly.

On a beautiful early autumn day, we returned to Great Bear.  Today we started from the parking area and took the utility trail to the Great Bear Springs Loop.  We followed this trail until the intersection with the Pump House Trail.  We followed the Pump House Trail to the Bench Cutoff Trail and then the River’s Landing Loop to reach the Whiskey Island Trail.  We hiked the entire Whiskey Island Trail and exited back to the parking lot using the Wheel Wash Extension.  The entire trip was 4.4 miles.

In general, the trails were all in good shape.  The most notable exception was two segments of the Wheel Wash Extension which put us in mud up to our ankles.  This particular trail allowed us to see several ruins along the way.  Pictures of these can be found on link above (today’s date) to my regular log.

Even on a rainy day like today, this was a really nice walk.  Shannon’s first trip and we did a 1.9 mile loop down the utility road to the second yellow trail entrance and back down the red trail.  The trees were shedding leaves all along the way.

I found the map of Great Bear through this site.
I took our two dogs on a long walk (3 miles is long for us!) at Great Bear. It must be well-kept secret because there was hardly anyone on this beautiful day.
Many more miles to discover on another day.
    Thanks for posting this info!
