The canal aqueduct in Camillus has a lot of history that goes with it.  Opened in 1845, the aqueduct allowed boats to travel above Nine Mile Creek.  Over the years, there has been a lot of time and money to complete its restoration and today it is “the only navigable aqueduct in the state.”  [1]

By the light of the full moon on New Year’s Eve, the “SNL” group did an evening hike from the parking area on Rt. 173 (Warner’s Road) to the aqueduct.  This late night hike was approximately 2.0 miles round trip.  Watch for snowmobiles on this trail at night.

Our first day visit to the canal park.  We parked at the Sims Store area and connected right out of the parking are with Clinton’s Ditch Trail.  We traveled along the .6 mile stretch to pickup a couple of geocaches and the merged back onto the main canal side trail.  We followed the canal side trail to the aqueduct and returned to the vehicle via the canal side trail all the way back.  Total length of the trip was 2.3 miles — all easy walking, even in the remaining snow.

This 355 acre area features a 40 acre forest with multiple use trails and offers some very scenic views at points.  It provides gentle inclines, forest areas and roaming fields.

Visits:
09-19-2009 (Advgirl & Chinook) – This was our first visit to the area.  The new DEC parking area was easily found and offered ample parking.  From the parking area, the trail starts off through the fields and leads to the former parking lot.  There are several “trails” through the fields shooting off in different directions and some of the main trail heads can be confusing.  Once into the forest, the trails are easily followed.  There are some scenic views from higher sections of the trail, but my favorite section of the hike was through the former orchards.  We counted up to eight different geocaches located on or near this trail.  We did see some mountain bikers — God bless them.  It’s a lot of uphill peddling.
