Onondaga Lake Park is to Central New York what Central Park is to New York City.  It is a hub of activity year round.  In additional to the hiking, biking and fishing offered at most parks, OLP offers the Onondaga Lake Skate Park, the Butterfly Garden of Hope, the Griffin Visitors Center, historic Longbranch Park, the Salt Museum, a Good Dog Park, Onondaga Lake Playground, a scenic picnic area at Willow Bay and archery.  Do not worry if you don’t equipment because they rent everything from boats and kayaks to skates.  During the summer, Longbranch Park brings in outdoor entertainment.  We’ve attended events such as the Scottish Festival and Shakespear in the Park.

All of the trails are well maintained and easily walked.  Using a combination of trails (see park map above) you can travel up to 5 miles around the lake.  In development are two more miles of additional trails near the fairgrounds bluff and a proposed 12 mile loop that would connect to the Syracuse Canalway Trail.

> 10/14/2009 (Chinook) – Today we took the Lakeland Trail.  If you follow the trail all the way to end, the foot bridge that crosses 690 is out and forces the trail to stop there.  On the way back, we cut over to the West Shore Trail for a change of scenery.  The entire trip was 3.1 miles and this includes the short extension to see the pond by 690.  Check out “Graffiti Bridge” if you take this trail.
> 02/17/2013 (Diane & Steven) – Braved the cold wind to walk and geocache along the southwestern side of the lake (Lakeland).
