01-07-2012 (Diane, Steven) – This relatively new trail is part of the Central New York Land Trust.  We parked at Cummings Park, which is right next to the trail, although there is an alternate entrance indicated by the coordinates above.  For the most part, this is an easy trail with sections of boards to assist in some of the wet areas.  Our visit had just a little ice on the ground which made the boards pretty slick.  To avoid the sharp incline, stay to the left at the trail intersections marked above.  The trail map also includes an elevation profile.

Morgan Hill State Forest is a large (5,253 acres) multi-use area with numerous trails in various levels of difficulty.  The webmaster at CNY Hiking has done a great job highlighting several of the trails (with trail maps) so I’ve decided to not duplicate his efforts.  I’ve linked the trails above to his site.  Additionally, this area is a featured hike in William Ehling’s “Fifty Hikes in Central New York”.

> 08/11/2009 (AdvGirl & Chinook) – We took a preliminary visit to Tinker Falls to see what the trails were like in this area.  The Tinker Falls Trail is a handicap accessible trail that leads to the base of the falls.  A moderate to difficult (based on the weather) trail on the side of the falls allows you to actually walk behind the falls.  On our initial visit the flow was very low over the falls.  I would recommend a visit during the spring for a more dramatic view.  Overall, due to the elevation changes, these trails could be moderate to difficult in areas.  Additional details about the other trails can be viewed from the links above.

This area is owned by the SUNY ESF.  However, they allow its use to the general public.  The 3,780 acre area on top of Tuxton Hill is full of trails for exploration.  From the information that I’ve gathered, this area was first settled in the early 1700’s for farmland but turned into a lumbering community around 1845 due to the acidic soil.  I found this ironic as there was a rather large farm directly across from the trail head.

The insects can be heavy at times so come prepared.  The trails often get muddy in low spots, so hiking boots are also recommended.

> 09/18/2009 (AdvGirl & Chinook) – On this beautiful late summer day, we returned to Heiberg to do two new trails — the Upper Trail and the Nature Trail.  The Upper Trail was all rough mowed grass.  Rough mowed in that there were several branches protruding up.  Still easily walked.  The view from the high points of this trail were very nice.

The Nature Trail was the best of the trails I’d hiked so far.  It offered a variety of interesting growth.  Throughout the trail are numbered markers and various posts pointing out a variety of trees.  One of the walking bridges was out at the trailhead, but was not a problem walking over to get back on the trail.  There was also a series of three geocaches along the trail.  A very nice hike for Chinook.  There was also a nice variety of mushrooms along the trail.
